Data disaster recovery is very important for any business. Disaster recovery is essentially the time it takes to get your business back up and running should a disaster occurrence. If your company has a flood or a fire can you set up a temporary base for your business elsewhere and have the systems up and running with access to the applications. Chances are good the longer your business is not up and running the more money you are losing. Can you be up and running if a disaster occurs?

Data disaster recovery consists of many things. This includes things like rebuilding the servers to mirror exactly how they were. In addition, all of the data that might be lost in a fire needs to be recovered. This requires back up tapes to be taken off site every week to ensure data integrity. Servers need to be rebuilt within minutes and quickly.

Data disaster recovery needs to be managed properly and maintained through the IT support staff. There needs to be logs and proof of backups. It is important to know the data that resides on each tape. You will also need to have a backup server offsite as well. This is important if you want to be able to read the tapes to perform the recovery.

You can not say you have a data disaster recovery plan in process unless you have tested it to really work. You will have to be able to rebuild servers, restore data from tapes, and be up and running quickly. Testing all of these things is the only way to know your plan is and will be effective if you have a disaster.
